MKM appoints Philip Johns as CEO

Independent builders’ merchant, MKM Building Supplies, has appointed a new Chief Executive Officer.

Philip Johns joins the Hull-based company from SIG Roofing, part of Sheffield-based building products distributor SIG Plc.

Mr Johns brings with him more than 30 years’ experience in the building supplies industry, having started his career at Graham Plumbing and Heating Ltd on the south coast.

MKM founder David Kilburn becomes Executive Chairman and will focus on expanding the company’s 42-strong branch network and further enhancing customer experience.

Mr Kilburn said he was delighted Mr Johns had agreed to join MKM Building Supplies.

“Philip brings a wealth of knowledge and experience of the building supplies industry,” he said.

“He is experienced in growing and developing a multi-branch network and managing a central team to support that network.

“After last year’s fantastic financial performance, trading has remained strong into our current financial year. Philip’s appointment will build on that further and is an important step in the next phase of our growth strategy, which has developing the branch network at its core.”

Headquartered on Stoneferry in Hull, MKM Buildings Supplies has 42 national branches stretching from Perth in the north to Deal in Kent in the south.

The company was founded in 1995 by David Kilburn and Peter Murray and has since grown to be the UK’s largest independent builders’ merchant, turning over £213m in 2014.
