Huws Gray Group acquires Higgins Building Supplies

Huws Gray Group reports that it has acquired Higgins Building Supplies, based in Wellingborough & Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire.

Established in 1866 by Thomas Henry Higgins, the company has been under the stewardship of five successive generations of the Higgins family. The family-owned builders’ merchant, which now operates from a 4.5-acre site and landscaping centre in Wellingbrorough plus a third site in Irthlingborough, offers a wide range of supplies for the trade and public and has been a member of the NBG buying group.

Matthew Owen, Head of Acquisitions for the Huws Gray Group, commented: “This latest acquisition of a well-known and highly respected company in the industry is a perfect fit for us to strengthen and expand our branch network. We’re not just buying a business; we’re buying over 150 years of history and we are looking forward to working alongside the existing teams and learning from their industry leading landscaping offer.”

Speaking of the sale, Nigel Higgins, the company’s current Managing Director, said: “We owe our longstanding success to a combination of factors. This includes a belief in offering a wide range of high-quality, competitively priced products backed by the highest levels of service and friendly, expert advice. A culture we know is shared by the Huws Gray Group and we are sure that we are leaving our loyal staff and customers in good hands.”

Higgins celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2016, and you can see PBM’s report on its open day celebrations to mark the occassion here.

With the company’s recent acquisitions (such as Builder Supply (West Coast)), Huws Gray Group lays claim to being one of the fastest growing independent builders’ merchants and this latest acquisition is said to ‘significantly strengthen’ the Group’s presence in the East Midlands and ‘signals a move for the company in connecting its established sites in the North West and South East’.
