Twiggs of Matlock, Derbyshire, has supplied tools and equipment for a construction project in Tristan da Cunha, the most remote, inhabited island in the world.
Galliford Try International, part of the FTSE 250 company, was appointed to construct a new health facility for the island’s residents and as long-time customers of Twiggs, Galliford Try sourced equipment from the Matlock family firm to ship to its team on the island. Groundwork started in November last year and the project is scheduled to be completed in June.
“We have worked with Wm Twigg for many years as a supplier of steelwork, tools and equipment” said John Hammerton, Operations Director at Galliford Try Intenational.
“Twiggs were selected as they are a dependable supplier who provide a consistent and reliable service which is essential when selecting equipment for a team who will be working on the most remote inhabited island in the world. Challenges are to ensure that the scheme is thoroughly planned and detailed prior to procurement of the building, that all materials and equipment are supplied on the ship at the start of the project, and the correct team are engaged to work in what is an extremely remote location.”
Lying 2,400km west of Cape Town in the South Atlantic, and with a population of just 280, this is a unique project. The building itself was prefabricated in Sweden to reduce erection time. This will be set upon foundations of precast concrete pads which support a galvanized steel grillage, to provide good resistance to the occasional earthquake tremors experienced by the island.
The new building, with internal space of almost 950m2, includes outpatients facilities, a dental facility, inpatients areas with a full surgical suite, and support areas.
