New Burton Roofing and Marley campaign highlights risks of non-compliant battens

Burton Roofing and Marley have launched a campaign designed to make it easier for customers to source complaint, quality battens for their roofing projects.

Battens are often the foundation of roofing jobs and over recent years the market has been flooded with poor quality, non-compliant battens, which have the potential to cause roof failures and accidents. They can also cost additional time and money due snapping and inconsistencies which lead to high levels of wastage.

The issue has become a real problem for the industry with poor quality battens being sold stamped as meeting British Standards, but are not non-complaint.

Independent merchant Burton Roofing and manufacturer Marley, which supplies the market-leading JB Red battens, have launched an awareness campaign which includes a series of short videos that detail all aspects of the issue. Contributions include the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) and On Top Roofing, roofing contractor to provide insights from across the industry.

Martin Armour, Commercial Director at Burton, explained: “Compliance and competence have been talked about increasingly over recent years and we want to support roofers to make it as easy as possible for them to purchase high quality, complaint products. It is one less thing for them to worry about, and means they can focus on the job in hand.

“Marley is the ideal partner, its manufacturing and checking process is extremely robust and its recognisable ‘JB Red’ battens consistently deliver a reliable, quality and complaint roofing batten. Getting it right first time is key to excellent workmanship and profitability on jobs, and JB Red is an ideal batten choice to deliver this.”

Stuart Nicholson, Head of Roofing Solutions at Marley, added: “There has been a lot of work done by ourselves and organisations like the NFRC to alert the sector to the risks of non-complaint battens but this campaign brings everything together in one place and provides a practical solution for roofers.

“They know JB Red is complaint, and readily available at their local Burton branch and they can get on with delivering projects and running their businesses. Together we’ve brought all the information in one place, so if they want to find out more, these bitesized videos are ideal to watch on the go and are great for educating the next generation of roofers.”

The videos can be accessed via Battens that matter! and cover the following:

  • Introduction to Burton and background to the campaign: Martin Armour, Commercial Director at Burton Roofing
  • Introduction to Marley and an overview of the manufacturing and checking process for JB Red: Stuart Nicholson, Head of Roofing Systems at Marley
