On 1 November 2019, Metsä Wood is opening a new terminal in the UK for landed joinery sales. This terminal, located in Ipswich, Suffolk, marks a period of significant expansion for the Finnish timber company, with the aim of improving availability for sawn joinery customers in all areas of the UK.
The opening of this hub follows what is said to be sustained year-on-year growth over the last five years for Metsä Wood UK. The terminal will be home to comprehensive sawn joinery stock levels, with more shipments planned to ensure long-term consistency and reliability for joinery sales.
The hub at Ipswich will reportedly replicate the high level of service which is already in effect at Metsä Wood’s established terminal in Seaham, which will continue to serve existing and new customers. Currently, the majority of Metsä Wood UK’s joinery sales are delivered or collected direct from the port at Seaham, but operating from two hubs will see a significant increase in availability. From November onwards, both stock locations will be capable of nationwide delivery.
As well as acting as hubs for nationwide deliveries with a possible 48 hour delivery lead time, customers local to both Ipswich and Seaham are invited to make use of the ‘pick a pack’ service. This is a free collection service, where customers can arrange their own transport to collect anything from a single pack to full loads. Providing this service direct from the wharf means that Metsä Wood can keep handling and distribution costs to a minimum, passing these savings on to the customer.
Both joinery terminals are also available to support increasing direct joinery sales to the UK and Ireland from Metsä Fibre sawmills in Finland and Russia.
