As one of the leading manufacturers in the supply of surface drainage systems, ACO says it has pioneered the management of surface water and today provides stockists with a complete package of integrated solutions for both the internal and external built environment.
The UK division, based in Bedfordshire, was established in 1984 where it continues to develop products using a diverse range of materials, supported by a committed after sales service.
PBM speaks to Andy Prosser, National Sales Manager — Buying Groups.
Q: How did you get into the industry and to your current position?
I started my career as a pattern making apprentice, before starting work at IG Lintels in the technical department for four and a half years. During my time there, I developed skills in structural engineering, gaining a technical perspective, and from there progressed into sales. Since then, I’ve held various sales roles resulting in my most recent position of National Sales Manager.
In my current role, my main priorities include supporting the account development team, whilst I’m also responsible for managing the independent buying group agreements.
“In terms of the challenges facing our sector, I feel the skills shortage is definitely worth commenting on. It’s essential we encourage young apprentices to join this profession and provide them with a rewarding and enjoyable career.”
Q: How do you feel the industry has changed in recent years?
The most significant change that stands out to me is the growth of independent merchants. They have been growing stronger and stronger over the years and it’s great to see this progression within the market.
With the independent buying groups growing stronger, we face a continued challenge to help merchants add value to their customers and become a strategic partner rather than just a wholesaler. Their position in the market is crucial and we must ensure we’re able to provide them with the right training to support their business.
From a wider perspective, we will have all noticed the changes in our weather system over recent years, with freak storms and flash floods impacting livelihoods across the UK and causing devastation. The need for sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) to combat flooding is one of the key drivers of our product development programme and we strive to provide innovative solutions to meet these needs.
Q: What are the current challenges facing your company?
In terms of the challenges facing our sector, I feel the skills shortage is definitely worth commenting on. This is having a significant impact on the skilled trades market as a whole, which indirectly impacts our company.
It’s essential we encourage young apprentices to join this profession and provide them with a rewarding and enjoyable career. I really do believe it’s an exciting time to be working in the building sector as it is constantly developing. It’s therefore important we maintain our skills and continue to grow and learn — something that ACO aims to provide at our academy, based on-site in Shefford.
Q: Which individual has influenced you most in your career?
There have been a variety of people so I can’t just pick one. Firstly, my Managing Director at IG Lintels, Tom Burge — with it being my first job — was definitely someone I could look up to. Jim Moorhouse was also a great mentor — he was the Sales Director at IG while I was working there. Dave Anderson, Managing Director of Rixonway Kitchens was also incredibly influential, and Richard Hill, Managing Director at ACO, has already been very supportive.
