As the professional body representing individuals in the sector, the BMF asserts that the Institute of Builders Merchants (IoBM) has “a well-defined and focused vision.”
The IoBM is dedicated to promoting professional standards and supporting personal development, thereby enabling individuals to advance their careers and succeed within the building materials industry. The organisation is focused on long-term professional development and raising the level of accredited qualifications held by those in the merchant profession, providing a framework within which individuals can enhance their skills and professional credentials.
The training leading to IoBM’s accredited qualifications is often, though not exclusively, provided by the BMF. This is unsurprising, as both organisations aim to foster excellence in the sector. And while the BMF concentrates on promoting business excellence for its corporate members, the IoBM assists individuals striving to excel in their chosen careers within the industry.
The great thing about the IoBM is that it offers something for everyone, with membership grades that recognise personal development whether you are just starting out, advancing through the ranks or already in a senior position:
Student membership is the starting point for those with one year’s experience, or in an apprenticeship or other relevant training.
Associate membership (AIBM) is the next stage for those with two years’ experience or who have completed a Level 2 development programme or other relevant training.
Full membership (MIBM) is awarded to those with five years’ experience or who have completed a Level 5 development programme or other relevant training.
Becoming a member demonstrates to the world that you are a committed, ambitious, and qualified professional.
“The IoBM offers something for everyone, with membership grades that recognise personal development whether you are just starting out, advancing through the ranks or already in a senior position.”
Recruitment and skills benefit
A professional institute offers broader benefits for the Building Materials sector regarding recruitment, by emphasising its value as a viable career option.
Andy Rayner, Director of Learning & Development at Travis Perkins plc, has worked with hundreds of merchanting apprentices, the majority of whom found their first job almost by accident. They had never considered working in a builders’ merchant when they were at school.
By helping to give visibility to the professionalism of the sector, Andy believes the IoBM offers a real advantage as the industry seeks to attract new and diverse skill sets through the BMCareers sector awareness programme. He explained: “The work the IoBM is doing to professionalise the merchant industry will make it a much more attractive place for people to work. Knowing there is training and development available and progression to a lengthy career is important when people are researching where to work.”
For those in a more advanced stage of their careers, the importance of staying up to date as the industry undergoes its digital transformation has never been more significant. IoBM members can access CPD seminars as well as more formal training to enhance their expertise and adapt to changes in their specific job roles.
Networking opportunities and mentorships are also crucial benefits. IoBM events, conferences, and meet-ups provide members with opportunities to connect with peers, industry leaders and experts in their respective fields. These interactions can lead to valuable collaborations and the sharing of knowledge and best practices.
