A “proper fit” for female tradespeople

Addressing an important issue for the sector, Carhartt has announced the launch of its purpose-designed Steel Pants range for women.

Too many women on site are still making do with workwear that was never designed for them – just 26% feel their clothing fits properly compared to 60% of men. It’s more than just an inconvenience; poorly fitting workwear can slow you down, make you uncomfortable and even be a safety hazard.

Accordingly, Carhartt’s new women’s Steel Pants have been “designed around how women actually move and work on site rather than simply resizing existing men’s products.”

The manufacturer says that its men’s Steel Pants range was a big hit when introduced in 2025. The women’s version has now been “carefully and specifically designed to fit women properly, allowing for easy movement but with the toughness and durability tradeswomen expect.” They are made from a stretch ripstop fabric that is described as being resistant to tears and abrasions but flexible enough to give plenty of freedom to climb, crouch, bend and stretch. Cordura™ reinforcement, meanwhile, is used in high-wear areas, helping the trousers stand up to tough site conditions without feeling heavy or constricting.

Comfort hasn’t been overlooked either. A Flex Cordura™ gusseted crotch allows for a greater range of movement and the Comfortflex waistband means the wearer gets a “secure but adaptable fit that stays in place through the day.” The result is said to be a pair of trousers that “moves with the wearer rather than working against them.”

In addition, the trousers have a multitude of pockets including reinforced front ledge pockets, a ruler pocket, a utility band and zippered hanging bag pocket keep tools close to hand. Kick panels allow for alterations and the Flex Cordura™ kneepad pockets, designed to meet EN 14404-4:2024 dimensions, have cleanout openings and are compatible with Carhartt Interoperable Kneepads 107552, which adapt to the shape of the knee and give lightweight Level 1 protection.

As more women join the industry, the demand for properly fitting, purpose-built workwear is only going one way with Carhartt asserting that its women’s Steel Pants “raise the standard for what women on site should expect from their workwear.”
