West Building Supplies has recently extended its branch network, working with Filstorage on the fit out of the shops, warehouses and yards.
Headquartered in Bridlington, West Building Supplies recently acquired new sites in Hull and Scunthorpe. The new depots extend West’s branch network further south in its East Yorkshire heartland, as well as into North Lincolnshire for the first time, bringing the merchant’s total number of sites to six.
These now encompass Scarborough, Beverley, Hull, Scunthorpe and two branches in Bridlington, which include a kitchen and bathroom showroom and also a timber division.
The merchant appointed Filstorage to fit out the shops, warehouses and yards. The Howden-based racking and storage specialist had previously worked with Wests to fully fit out its Scarborough branch and fitted the kitchen and bathroom showroom at its Bridlington depot, which included reconfiguring the existing pallet racking and supplying and fitting new shop display shelving.
With the latest work building on the longstanding relationship between the two companies, Gary Winter, Filstorage Business Development Manager for the North, commented: “West Building Supplies bought the Scunthorpe site after the previous occupier — another merchant — went bust. The site was just left with all the stock still there.
“We essentially remodeled the shop and warehouse to their specifications, fitting pallet racking, shop-shelving and a new trade counter.”

Gary continued: “Hull came quickly after that, after a timber merchant sadly went out of business. West bought the site and we fitted shop shelving, a new counter and vertical timber racking in warehouse. They were both great jobs, in quick succession, that meant West Building Supplies could be up and running quickly.
“We’ve worked with West for a number of years and it’s great to be part of its ongoing growth journey.”
West Building Supplies is one of Yorkshire’s largest independent builders’ merchants with more than 50 years’ trading experience. As well as providing all building and timber supplies, the business also has a PVCu window and door division and offers a timber cut-to-size service.
Managing Director Oliver West said adding the Hull and Scunthorpe branches was facilitating significant extra growth for the merchant. He explained: “As a business, growth is always on our agenda and we’re always on the lookout for new opportunities. So, when we saw the sites in Scunthorpe and Hull, we knew they were a great fit for us and snapped them up.
“We contacted Filstorage because we’ve worked closely with them before and knew they could turn the sites round quickly, enabling us to hit the ground running. As ever, working with Filstorage was painless. Between us, we produced plans for each branch, and they executed those quickly.
Oliver concluded: “The branches are now fully operational and trading well.”
