Independent merchants outline charity initiatives

As the year is drawing to a close and the festive season approaches, independent merchants are outlining their charity initiatives.

A E Spink is launching a year-long partnership with Prostate Cancer UK, in a bid to support those affected by the disease and fund vital research.

The builders’ merchant will be donating £1 for every ton bag sold from 1st November 2020 to 31st October 2021, with a minimum annual sum of £10,000.

The money raised will be used to fund research into better diagnosis and treatment of the disease, and support for men and their families affected. A E Spink also wants to raise awareness of the disease, particularly among its male employees.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. Around 400,000 men in the UK are living with the disease and one man dies from it every 45 minutes. Chris Meek, Building Sales Director at A E Spink, said: “It is fantastic to be partnering Prostate Cancer UK. Our aggregate bulk bags now carry the Prostate Cancer logo as we want to raise as much awareness as possible with our colleagues, customers and the public along with money to fund vital research”

Similarly, NYEs Building Supplies has announced the four finalists of its ‘Proud to be Local’ initiative to make it onto the shortlist and is calling out to the public to vote for its favourite. The two groups with the most votes will win £3,000 each.

The four causes that have been shortlisted are:

Rex Nye, Managing Director of NYEs Building Supplies, said: “There are two ways for people to vote – on Facebook and via email. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we have had to suspend voting at our depot. However, everyone is welcome to vote using the available methods. We wish our four finalists the very best of luck.”
