Inspire the young generation on Maddie’s Day 2023

Run in partnership with the Construction Youth Trust, Maddie’s Day 2023 is just around the corner on Friday 22nd of September!

The Maddie Rose Campaign aims to help and inspire young people to discover the varied and rewarding careers available in the supplier and merchanting sectors, as well as the wider construction and built environment industry. The initiative was established as a lasting legacy in celebration of the life of Maddie Rose, an inspirational young woman who was dedicated to showcasing the aspirational careers available in the sector she cared for so passionately.

With the instrumental support of the building materials supplier and merchanting industries since fundraising started in 2021, Construction Youth Trust has collectively raised an extraordinary £119, 822. From this generosity, the organisation is able to continue its remarkable work inspiring young people, just like Maddie, to pursue career opportunities within the building materials supplier and merchanting industries.

Through these donations, the Maddie Rose Campaign has been engaging with local schools and colleges to offer guidance to young people and students as to how they can fulfil their potential with a career in construction. More donations are, of course, always welcome with the real aim being to share advice from people inside the industry and, accordingly, the campaign is also asking for businesses to pledge to support youth engagement in their local areas.

Following on from the success of the ‘Hidden Careers’ initiative last year, the campaign has developed — with support from BMF Ambassadors — a new school engagement programme focusing on Negotiation Skills. The session helps develop a young person’s own negotiation skills as well as discovering the incredible careers in the that depend so much on successful negotiators.

Go yellow for Maddie’s Day

To raise awareness of the campaign, organisations across the industry are being asked to turn yellow in support of Maddie’s Day. Last year, teams turned up to work in yellow outfits whilst social media was filled with the shining Maddie’s Day logo.

And in 2023, the industry will once again Go Yellow for Maddie’s Day! Please show your support and help spread the word on Friday 22nd September 2023 by adopting the yellow colour and logo on your social media platforms for the day, helping to ensure Maddie’s legacy lives on and more young people are introduced to the opportunities presented by this wonderful industry.

Images and other resources are available to download from the Construction Youth Trust website to support the campaign, and please share your stories on the day via your own social channels or through the Construction Youth Trust (contact Freya.Higgs@constructionyouth.org.uk).

On the 22nd of September, organisations across the sector will be changing their social media branding yellow and adopting the Maddie Rose Campaign logo to raise awareness and highlight the rewarding industry careers open to young people.

Maddie, a marketing executive at Keyline Civils Specialists, loved working in the construction industry and was passionate about highlighting its benefits to other young people so that they could develop through it as she had. At the time of her tragic death in August 2021, she had just been appointed Director of Visibility on the Travis Perkins Youth Board.

The Youth Board has three main aims — ‘Attract, Retain, Encourage’ — and works to bring in a younger generation of people into the organisation, keep them in the business and help them to see it as a career, rather than just a job. The idea is to ensure all younger employees feel encouraged, comfortable and safe to speak out and voice their opinions.

The Maddie Rose Campaign aims to build on those principles across the wider industry, creating a lasting legacy in celebration of the life and work of Maddie Durdant-Hollamby.
