Interim role at BMF for Dennis Smith as long-standing Secretary Peter Matthews retires

The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has appointed Dennis Smith on a consultancy basis as Interim Membership Services Director. He will assist the BMF for a three-month period, while the trade body seeks a permanent replacement for its long-standing Federation Secretary, Peter Matthews.

Dennis has over 40 years experience of the builders merchants’ sector, most recently as MD of Bradfords Building Supplies. He also has a long association with the BMF, serving as a non-executive director from 2005-2011 and was chairman of South-West region during 2013-2104.

Dennis will work alongside Peter Matthews in June, leading up to Peter’s retirement after 31 years of loyal service, and take full responsibility for member services during July and August. Dennis will also be part of the BMF team at the BMF All Industry Conference in Malta, and work with BMF MD John Newcomb to recruit a permanent Membership Services Director.

John said: “I would like to thank Peter for his many years of excellent service to the BMF and to wish him well in the next stage of his life. Though I am pleased to say that even in retirement he will continue his association with the BMF, acting as Secretary to the Board until the end of the Year.

“Replacing someone of Peter’s calibre and experience is not an easy task. We have, therefore, been fortunate to sign up Dennis Smith to help us through the transition. The breadth and depth of his knowledge and understanding of the merchanting industry will be a great asset over the next three months, and I am looking forward to working with him.”
